Drawing at the Van Gogh Museum's Open Studio

In the middle of Amsterdam's iconic Van Gogh Museum, you'll find a place where art comes to life in a very personal way. The Open Atelier, located behind restaurant Bistro Vincent, is freely accessible to all museum visitors and is a creative oasis within the museum tour. Here you step out of the role of spectator and become a maker yourself.

The format is approachable and inviting. Pencils and paper are laid out at long tables, accompanied by various drawing assignments and carefully chosen objects. Think copying sunflowers, inspired by Van Gogh's famous work, or sketching everyday objects such as a coffee pot - a subtle nod to The Potato Eaters. With no pressure and no expectations, this is all about experimenting, watching and, above all, doing.

What makes the Open Studio extra special is the temporary exhibition Looking at Art with Vincent, which will be on view through April 5, 2026. This colorful exhibition features works by children from asylum centers, who through workshops gave their own interpretation of Van Gogh's life and work. The project is a collaboration with Stichting de Vrolijkheid and shows how art can be a powerful tool for expression, connection and development.

“Real art does not start with looking, but with daring to create. Drawing in the Gogh Museum's Open Studio lets you discover and create the art of Vincent van Gogh.”

The energy in the space is palpable: from young visitors drawing their first lines to adults rediscovering the freedom of drawing. The Open Atelier makes art tangible and personal, and fits seamlessly with the idea that creativity is in everyone.

Drawing in the Open Studio is for children ages 6 to 12 and is €15 per child.
